Quiet lunches and early evenings can give this
long-standing Putney Italian a misleading air
of forlornness, but come 8.30 on almost any
night of the week, the restaurant is packed to
the gunnels with well-heeled locals looking
for a decent supper and a glass or two of wine.
The red walls and wine racks give the place a
Country feel, and indeed there’s a rustic quality
To the menu.  The food is good: slivers of
marinated pork belly have the fattiness of the
meat offset with fresh apple and carrot, and a
fillet of black bream served on a herby broth
with fresh borlotti beans is nicely timed.  But
what is really impressive is the wine –
proprietor Giuseppe Turi is passionate about
the stuff, and his carefully annotated all-Italian
list (starting around £5 a glass) is over 300
bins long.  Follow his recommendations for
food and wine matches to add a new
dimension to your meal.
